I am so thankful that I was able to stay busy this past week. It definitely help the my missing my mom. There is an after school program called kids corner that some of Margaret's friends run in the area, and this past week a couple from the states was down and they ran a 3 day program called Discovering the Outdoor Classroom. So I was able to help with this program this last week. It was run on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday after school. How it worked was, all the kids were split into 5 groups of 4, and each group had a leader or two. Then in our group we went out and explored nature. The first day every kid had to pick their favorite thing in the sky, ant, fruit/tree, and animal. Then they had to describe it in their journals, with as much detail as possible. They couldn't just say it was blue. They could either write, draw, or use numbers, or a combination of the three, to describe their favorites. On the second day they had to use their 5 senses to describe their favorite things. We also ate some different fruit and felt different things, that the kids had to describe. Then on the third day we took it all and related it to what the bible said. I really enjoyed getting to know the kids in my group.
Some other things that happened this week were Wednesday morning we went to visit a widow, and try to offer encouragement in her time of trouble. She is in the midst of a spiritual battle. Then we went to the primary school that is affiliated with our church and checked out the building project that they are doing. They are in the process of adding 2 extra class rooms. Thursday and Friday morning I went to preschool. Friday evening I had bible study with Dayana. Saturday morning I went to tutor Zeriah. In the afternoon I went along with Margaret to a baby shower. They are quite comparable to the ones we have at home. The shower was for a girl who is 18 and is due in the next month or two. She looked so young, I can't imagine having a baby, as much as I like them. In the evening Ms Rosemary and some of her kids came over to watch War Room. I'm not sure if I've mentioned it but it's Ms Rosemary's 6 kids that spent the evening with us a while back. Her husband has currently left her, but he has taken 2 of the boys with him, and she hasn't seen them in almost 2 months. Sunday I would say was another typical Sunday. Relaxing and playing games in the afternoon
So today I did all my laundry and had hung it to dry. Some of my shorts I had hung underneath the back stair case by my room to dry. A little clothes line had been hung up there at some point so I thought I would use it. As I was hanging some of it up there was a little lizard crawling around, but I hung it up anyway. When I checked on it later I kept thinking I heard something crawling around. I took some of it off before I went downtown, but some of it was still damp so I kept it up. Shortly after I got back Cory said there was a snack, and it turned out it was on the steps that were on top of my clothes. Cory took a machete to the snake and the snake dripped blood onto my shorts! I think I managed to get it all out, and thank goodness it wasn't a poisonous snake. That is the first snake I have seen since being here, and I hope not to see another one. The snake fell to the ground and last I checked was still there, not sure if it is still alive. I don't think I will be hanging clothes there anymore, as I guess you just don't know what may happen to it. And that was today's excitement.
Also on Thursday night we had 2 little Mexican Mennonite girls come spend the night with us. They were ages 2 and 4. There parents had crossed illegally into Belize with them and they left early Friday morning. They didn't speak a word of English, just German. Another sign I need to learn more languages :)
"You will never be completely at home again, because part of your heart will always be elsewhere. That is the price you pay for the richness of loving and knowing people in more than one place." I came across this quote this week and I thought it had a lot of truth to it. It made me wonder that when I go home, if it will feel like the home I knew when I left? Or if I will feel as if something is missing. I'm sure that I will be leaving part of my heart here in Belize, when the time comes for me to go.
